The
Coliseum also known
as the Colosseum in
Rome is recognized as
the symbol of power
in the ancient empire
of Rome. This is perhaps
one of the very preserved
and largest architecture
from ancient Rome, despite
the fact that wraths
of time and nature have
taken a toll on this
gigantic structure.
This structure is notable
in the Roman city, only
to tell the story of
past events during the
Roman domination. In
the film Gladiator the
use of the Coliseum
is the representation
of life. The Colosseum
was presented as the
stage or the arena where
gladiators are known
to have fought for their
lives and various other
types of games and competitions
like animal fighting
took place.
In fact, it was to
this effect that the
construction of the
Coliseum started under
Emperor Vespasian in
70 to 72 AD completed
under his son Titus
in 80 after JC.
The Coliseum is an
outdoor amphitheatre
which could hold 50000
spectators at one point
of time during the ancient
Roman period, and perhaps
its architecture is
known for having raised
the levels of construction
in modern times. At
that time such a huge
structure of its’
stature was a novelty
.This oval shaped structure
is known for measuring
about 48 metres high
and 189 metres long
and 156 metres wide
with a total base area
being about six hectares
and has 4 levels. The
1st level is for the
royal family and senior
officials of the emperor
and the 2nd level is
for the families of
aristocrats while the
3rd and 4th levels are
intended for the crowd.
