Colosseum (Coliseum), Rome

The Coliseum also known as the Colosseum in Rome is recognized as the symbol of power in the ancient empire of Rome. This is perhaps one of the very preserved and largest architecture from ancient Rome, despite the fact that wraths of time and nature have taken a toll on this gigantic structure. This structure is notable in the Roman city, only to tell the story of past events during the Roman domination. In the film Gladiator the use of the Coliseum is the representation of life. The Colosseum was presented as the stage or the arena where gladiators are known to have fought for their lives and various other types of games and competitions like animal fighting took place.

In fact, it was to this effect that the construction of the Coliseum started under Emperor Vespasian in 70 to 72 AD completed under his son Titus in 80 after JC.

The Coliseum is an outdoor amphitheatre which could hold 50000 spectators at one point of time during the ancient Roman period, and perhaps its architecture is known for having raised the levels of construction in modern times. At that time such a huge structure of its’ stature was a novelty .This oval shaped structure is known for measuring about 48 metres high and 189 metres long and 156 metres wide with a total base area being about six hectares and has 4 levels. The 1st level is for the royal family and senior officials of the emperor and the 2nd level is for the families of aristocrats while the 3rd and 4th levels are intended for the crowd.

 

The exterior of the Coliseum was made of stones and travertine inner part is called upon to represent the splendid architecture skills and doors were numbered at regular intervals in order to facilitate free passage for 50000 spectators for the purpose exit from the Coliseum easy. The Coliseum in the past has been used as a prison and is currently known to be one of the most popular attractions among tourists from all over the world and is counted among the best examples of an icon of the Roman antiquity.
